January 19 is usually the start of a period of real New Year's cheer. St Nicholas Day is celebrated on different dates (6 or 19 December), but adults and children alike look forward to the day. Early in the morning, it is customary to look under the pillow in the hope of finding a large sock full of presents. If the child has behaved well throughout the year and receives good grades, parents will not skimp on expensive gifts - something the child has been dreaming of. If, however, the behavior left much to be desired - in the sock may be the usual roses. The most common gifts have always been tangerines, lollipops, sweets and gingerbread.
